For a majority of Republican voters, an endorsement from 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney would have no impact on which candidate they support for the 2016 Republican nomination.

Nearly one in five, however, said an endorsement from Romney would make them less likely to support a particular Republican presidential candidate.

A YouGov poll conducted March 4-5 asked approximately 2,000 Americans—including approximately 500 Republican voters—how an endorsement from Romney would impact their support for a particular Republican candidate.

In response, 52 percent of Republicans said an endorsement from Romney would have “no effect” on their support, while 22 percent responded it would make them “less likely” to support a candidate. Only 18 percent replied Romney’s support would make them “more likely” to support a candidate.

For a majority of those who support Ted Cruz, John Kasich, and Marco Rubio, an endorsement would Romney would have “no effect.”

For those who support Donald Trump, a plurality (48 percent) stated the endorsement from Romney would have no impact on their support. However, 39 percent responded an endorsement from the previous nominee would make them “less likely” to support Trump.

These results come as a Morning Consult poll shows that Romney calling Trump a “fraud and a phony” has “no impact either way” on support for Trump from a plurality (48 percent) of Republican voters.
