Walking into the election, Donald Trump had the worst favorability rating in presidential polling history. In the days following the election, the president-elect's favorability has significantly improved.

According to a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll of 1,885 registered voters, 46 percent say they have a very favorable or somewhat favorable opinion of the president-elect, a sharp increase of nine percentage points since before the election on Nov. 8.

Meanwhile, his unfavorability dropped from 61 percent to 46 percent, with 12 percent saying they have a somewhat unfavorable opinion of Trump and 34 percent a very unfavorable opinion.

Morning Consult cofounder and chief research officer Kyle Dropp says that "a honeymoon phase is common for new presidents."

"Trump’s favorability among voters has reached new highs since he became president-elect,” Dropp tells POLITICO. "This honeymoon phase is common for new presidents. For example, Obama saw about a 20 point swing in his favor following the 2008 election."

Dropp adds that another contributing factor to Trump’s rise in popularity is his transition effort.

"About half say Donald Trump's presidential transition is as organized or more organized than previous administrations, whereas about one in three describe it as less organized than past transitions,'" he explains.

Similarly, Gallup reports that Trump’s favorability rating has improved since the election, increasing from 34 percent to 42 percent, the highest favorable percentage recorded by Gallup throughout the election cycle and beyond.

Crossing party lines, his favorability has improved among Republicans, Independents, and Democrats.

On the eve of the election, Trump and his former rival Hillary Clinton had the two worst favorability ratings in presidential polling history

Trump may experience a boost in popularity come his inauguration on Jan. 20.

Until then, the president-elect and his transition team will be hard at work constructing his administration.
