Approximately one in four students in the United Kingdom claims to suffer from some kind of mental illness.

YouGov’s survey of 1,061 students registered at universities in Britain found that 19 percent of men and 34 percent of women have a mental illness. In total, approximately 27 percent of the surveyed student population claimed to have mental health problems.

The survey also found that approximately half of students who identify themselves as part of the gay and bisexual community claim to have a mental illness. Broken down, 38 percent of gays, 49 percent of bisexuals, and 50 percent of “others” claimed to have a mental illness.

Only 22 percent of the students who said they were straight reported they have mental health problems.

Mental health problems were highest for students between the ages of 45-54. Of that age group, 37 percent reported being mentally ill.

Of those suffering from mental illnesses, the most common mental illnesses are anxiety (at 77 percent) and anxiety (at 74 percent).

The YouGov poll was conducted between July 22-29.
