A recent YouGov poll reveals that a majority of Americans (63 percent) believe the country is “off on the wrong track,” more than double the percentage of those who think the country is “generally headed in the right direction” (29 percent).

While there seems to be much agreement on the direction of country, pollsters are divided on where to lay the blame.

Of those who say they the country is “off on the wrong track,” 22 percent of respondents blame “a lot” on President Obama, Hillary Clinton, or Democrats in Congress, 10 percent blame Donald Trump or Republicans in Congress, and 22 percent blame “some in both groups.”

YouGov argues that one explanation for the elevated "wrong track" numbers is the growing partisan polarization in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

The partisanship can also serve as a partial explanation for the disagreement about where to lay the blame.
