Florida police rescued an Indian woman last Saturday after she was beaten by her husband and in-laws, who had flown in from India.
The Hillsborough County Sheriffs Office reported that the abused wife, 33-year-old Silky Gaind, called her parents in India and told them about the beatings. Gaind's family then notified the authorities of the abuse.
When police arrived at the Riverview home, they found Devbir Kalsi, 33, and his parents, 67-year-old Jasbir Kalsi and his 61-year old wife, Bhupinder, holding Gaind hostage. According to a report by Fox 13, the in-laws had traveled from India to help their son "counsel and discipline his wife for being disobedient" after he had asked for their help.
A deputy arrived at the residence and knocked on the door, but received no response. Fortunately, Gaind struggled her way to the door, screaming for the deputy to save her and her one-year-old child. According to the Tampa Bay Times, the deputy forced his way into the home while Kalsi and his family tried to stop him.
The New York Post found that Gaind had been battered "repeatedly and forcefully," according to the police report. During the altercation, the couple's infant was accidentally struck in the face. Gaind was then locked in a room with no phone after being threatened at knifepoint by her husband's father.
The Tampa Bay Times reported that Devbir and Jasbir Kalsi could potentially face "charges of false imprisonment, child abuse and denying access to 911." Devbir could also be charged with felony battery charges, while his father has been accused of "aggravated battery with a deadly weapon."
Devbir's mother may be looking at "charges of battery domestic violence and failure to report child abuse."
Fox 13 also reports that the three have all been booked into Hillsborough County Jail and are being held without bond. They also face the possibility of deportation. Luckily for Gaind and her child, the sheriff's office claims that the two are both in a safe place.
