Openly gay mayor of South Bend, Indiana and 2020 Democratic hopeful Pete Buttigieg in an interview with the TODAY show on Tuesday said that if God were associated with a political party, he “can’t imagine” it would be the GOP.

Buttigieg, the youngest of the current 2020 Democratic field at age 37, said that he thinks it’s “important that we stop seeing religion used as a kind of cudgel, as if God belonged to a political party.”

“And if he did, I can't imagine it would be the one that sent the current president into the White House,” he said.

Well, that's one way to isolate voters.

Buttigieg, who came out as gay while campaigning for reelection as mayor and has linked his orientation to both his politics and his Episcopalian faith, went on to say that “what we see [in the White House] is so different than what I hear in scripture when I am in church."

"I hear about taking care of the marginalized and defending the weak and supporting the poor and visiting the prisoner and welcoming the stranger and humility and decency," he said. "These are the things that are taught in Sunday schools around this country. And so the idea that that is the property of the Republican Party, especially this Republican Party and some of the choices they have made in recent years, it just doesn't add up to me."

Buttigieg's take on God not being a Republican comes as a departure from his previous remarks that “God does not have a political party.”

He has often questioned President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence’s faith.
