WATCH: Penn. HS Coach Suspended After Head-butting a Referee

Ben Graham | January 6, 2016

The head basketball coach for Neshaminy High School in Langhorne, Penn., is under administrative leave pending review after he appears to lose his temper and head-butt one of the referees officiating the game Tuesday evening.

Video footage shows Jerry Devine making physical contact with the referee forceful enough to send the official to the floor. At first glance the move may appear to be a head-butt, but from a different angle appears to be more of a chest thrust that shoved an unsuspecting referee to the ground.

Devine was given his second technical foul of the game, which would have ejected him from the game if there had been more than 30 seconds on the clock.

Neshaminy High School stated that Devine was placed on administrative leave on Wednesday. The school is reviewing both Devine’s teaching and coaching positions, expressing that such behavior does not meet their values of fair play and sportsmanlike conduct. From the school's statement:

Mr. Devine has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of that review for both his teaching and coaching positions. The athletic program at Neshaminy places the values of fair play and sportsmanlike conduct above all. We expect our coaches and staff to teach and uphold those principles, while acting in a professional manner at all times.
