Vice President Mike Pence in an interview Tuesday night defended prayer in the face of attacks and criticism from the left following the Texas church mass shooting that left 26 people dead, 20 injured.

He argued that, despite people who mock prayer as pointless and call for action instead, praying for the victims of the Texas church shooting and their families “is making a difference in their lives.”

Pence added that prayer “takes nothing away from our determination to get to the bottom of what happened.”

"I'm a believer, and I believe in prayer,” said Pence. “And I know that at this moment of such heartbreak and loss in that community, that what most Americans are most able to do is to pray for those families.”

“It takes nothing away from our determination to get to the bottom of what happened,” he said. “But right now, I truly believe that covering those families in prayers is making a difference in their lives.”

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) on Monday walked out on a Congressional moment of silence for the shooting victims.

Writer Stephen King on Sunday mocked people praying for the victims with a rhyme on Twitter that reads, “Enough with the prayin’. Time to start legislatin’.”

Democratic lawmakers and celebrities have called for action instead of prayer, pushing for stricter gun control laws.

The list goes on.

Vice President Pence plans to attend a prayer service for the victims in Sutherland Springs, Tex., along with Second Lady Karen Pence, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, and other members of Congress.
