In the aftermath of the mass shooting that left 59 concert-goers dead and more than 500 others wounded in Las Vegas over the weekend, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi urged House Speaker Paul Ryan to establish a select committee on gun violence and support tougher gun laws.

Pelosi tweeted a copy of her formal letter to Ryan Monday:

"The epidemic of gun violence in our country continues to challenge the conscience of our nation." Pelosi wrote. "Congress has a moral duty to address this horrific and heartbreaking epidemic. Charged with the solemn duty to protect and defend the American people, we must respond to these tragedies with courage, unity, and decisive action.

The Minority Leader urged Ryan to support the "bipartisan King-Thompson" bill that would "strengthen" background checks. In addition, Pelosi also requested that Ryan create a Select Committee on Gun Violence in order to "study and report back common sense legislation to help end this crisis."

"Today is a day for prayer, mourning, and love, but it must also be a day for action," she added. "As members of Congress, our words of comfort to the families of the victims of the Las Vegas massacre will ring hollow unless we take long overdue action to ensure that no other family is forced to endure such an unimaginable tragedy."
