“Tim IS Buzz!” said actress Patricia Heaton of her friend Tim Allen, the voice of Buzz Lightyear in Disney’s "Toy Story" franchise. She’s right.
Heaton went on to ask,”Why would they completely castrate this iconic, beloved character?”
That’s a good question. Unfortunately, I think we know the answer.
The "Toy Story" franchise is much loved by families and children of all ages. It’s family-friendly entertainment. For whatever reason, Disney has chosen to develop a spin-off of the original "Toy Story" with Buzz Lightyear. It’s confusing. Buzz is a toy that thinks he’s an astronaut. The spin-off is supposed to be the movie that the toy is based on. This isn’t a Pixar movie like the "Toy Story" movies. Apparently, it's a more mature story, including the addition of a gay kissing scene.
"Captain America" star Chris Evans is the new voice of Buzz, and he admits he was intimidated in taking the iconic role.

According to the New York Post, the new Buzz character is a more serious action hero and Tim Allen’s Buzz is more about comic relief, according to the director.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, “Lightyear” director Angus MacLane claimed that Allen wouldn’t be a good fit as his version of Buzz, who “is a little goofier and is a little dumber, and so he is the comic relief.”
“In this film, Buzz is the action hero,” MacLane explained. “He’s serious and ambitious and funny, but not in a goofy way that would undercut the drama. Chris Evans has the gravitas and that movie-star quality that our character needed to separate him and the movie from Tim’s version of the toy in ‘Toy Story.'”
Chris Evans weighed in on criticism that there's a kissing scene between two female characters. Disagree that this is appropriate for younger audiences? You might just be an idiot.
"The real truth is those people are idiots," Evans told Reuters Television, as reported by Fox News. "There's always going to be people who are afraid and unaware and trying to hold on to what was before. But those people die off like dinosaurs. I think the goal is to pay them no mind, march forward and embrace the growth that makes us human."
Whether or not “Lightyear” becomes a huge hit remains to be seen. Spin-offs often don’t measure up to the original version, and in this case, that may prove to be true. A lot of families may be surprised with the new action hero. So far, fourteen countries have banned the movie because of the kissing scene.
