Children attending a Chicago block party received cheers from their parents as they attempted to break open a piñata in the likeness of an ICE agent.

As CBS Chicago reports:

“The event was organized by a chamber of commerce comprised of over 25 East Side businesses.  A representative said they never would have imaged their event would cause commotion.”

The occasion was captured on video and reportedly received some backlash from people in the community and on Facebook.

“It was not meant in a negative way at all towards law enforcement,” Anthony Martinez, who leads the Chicago chapter of Los Brown Berets, a nationwide activist group aimed at overcoming inequalities against Chicanos, told CBS Chicago.

“We’re just making a statement,” he said.

Martinez told the outlet his organization transformed a Batman piñata into an ICE officer.

“The children of the community had a great time hitting the Ice pinata and getting candy at the East side community day,” Los Brown Berets - Chicago posted to Facebook. ‘Viva La Causa [live the cause].”

Mark Covington of the East Side Chamber of Commerce told the outlet that despite the adverse reaction the event went well and they plan on doing the block party again next year.
