Over two-and-a-half decades ago, one man unknowingly became the subject of one of the most iconic pictures of all time.

Thursday marked the 26th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, during which hundreds - possibly thousands - of students were killed standing up to the Chinese military for failing their people for years.

They cried for political reform during a time when the Chinese economy was in shambles.

Amid the hardship and struggle, this man served as a catalyst for change.

The man captured in this photo has never been identified, but his anonymity did not diminish his influence.

While China has made progress by letting down some of its walls and opening its markets to the world, censorship remains.

It is still illegal to talk about the massacre in China. As seen in this video from 2005, many Chinese natives understand the questions being asked, but very few respond to the questions directly.
