Recent immigration data shows that only about one in five illegal aliens who attempt to enter the United States at the Southwest border cross through a designated port of entry. The rest don't even bother.

In May, Customs and Border Protection deemed 11,568 people inadmissible at official ports of entry along the Southwest U.S. border. On the other hand, border agents caught a whopping 40,344 illegal aliens who’d crossed the border illegally in between ports of entry.

Immigration officials define "inadmissibles" as “individuals encountered at ports of entry who are seeking lawful admission into the United States but are determined to be inadmissible, individuals presenting themselves to seek humanitarian protection under our laws; and individuals who withdraw an application for admission and return to their countries of origin within a short timeframe.”

All together this means that of the 51,912 total illegal aliens apprehended at the southern U.S. border in May, only about 22 percent – roughly one in five – even bothered to try passing through a designated border crossing.

But hey, it’s not like those ports of entry are actually there for a reason or anything. Carry on.
