Okla. State Senate Passes Bill Criminalizing Abortions

Oklahoma lawmakers passed a bill on Thursday making it illegal for doctors to perform abortions in the state.

The bill passed 33-12 in the state senate. Republicans and Democrats alike voted to “restrict any physician who performs an abortion from obtaining or renewing a license to practice medicine in Oklahoma,” according to an Associated Press report on the bill.

This legislation has a decent shot at being approved by Gov. Mary Fallin (R), who's been a consistant supporter of anti-abortion measures.

Republican State Senator Nathan Dahm, who introduced the bill in January of this year, said he hopes the move could lead to an overturning of Roe v. Wade.

"Since I believe life begins at conception, it should be protected, and I believe it's a core function of state government to defend that life from the beginning of conception," said Dahm.

Pro-abortion legislators were not happy at all about the decision.

"Oklahoma politicians have made it their mission year after year to restrict women's access vital health care services, yet this total ban on abortion is a new low," Amanda Allen, an attorney for the Center for Reproductive Rights said in a statement.

Abortion advocates have vowed legal action against the bill if it becomes law.
