What a strange situation. On one hand, the humanitarian in oneself will naturally feel for the people stuck aboard the missing makeshift tourist submarine run by a company called OceanGate. But the skeptic in people will may get a chuckle, ironically, because of what OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush said in a Zoom interview.

Besides some of the equipment used in the sub, which many have called primitive, Rush’s take on his hiring process might have contributed to the situation they now — unfortunately — find themselves in.

When I started the business, one of the things you'll find, there are other sub-operators out there but they typically have gentleman who are ex-military submariners and you'll see a whole bunch of 50-year-old white guys.

I wanted our team to be younger, to be inspirational and I'm not going to inspire a 16-year-old to go pursue marine technology but a 25-year-old, you know, who's a subpilot or a platform operator or one of our techs can be inspirational. So we've really tried to get very intelligent, motivated, younger individuals involved because we're doing things that are completely new.

That might be one of the dumbest takes of all-time. Rush is telling us that “50-year-old white guys” can’t be “inspirational, yet the most “inspirational” person on the planet is an almost 52-year-old white guy.

His name is Elon Musk.

Just because someone is wealthy, that doesn’t make them immune from the woke mind virus. Who cares how woke anything is when it comes to matters of life and death?

Of course, prayers go out to those who didn’t sign up — or apparently do their homework on this excursion — to be taken on a third-rate, woke voyage.
