San Francisco took another step along the “progressive” lane as they banned plastic water bottle sales from the San Francisco International Airport (SFO).
Tuesday began the prohibition of single-use plastic water bottles sales at the airport which meant travelers wouldn’t be able to purchase a bottle to hydrate themselves during their flights.
Soda, tea and juice bottles are still allowed to be sold in plastic bottles. The ban only applies to the healthiest option - water.
"We're the first airport that we're aware of to implement this change," SFO spokesman Doug Yakel told the Chronicle. "We're on the leading edge of the industry, and we want to push the boundaries of sustainability initiatives."
The ban applies to all vendors in the airport and every size of disposable bottled water is prohibited so you better not be seen with one if you’re traveling in or working at SFO.
If you do find yourself needing a drink of water at the airport, you’ll be forced to visit one of their more than 100 “hydration stations” where you can fill up a reusable water bottle that you can purchase — likely for a high price — from one of their many vendors.
San Francisco first banned the use of plastic water bottles on city-owned property in 2014, the airport was just another step in their desire to get plastic out of your hands and out of the city’s sight.
The ultimate reasoning behind the ban: to cut the airport's carbon emissions and energy use to zero by 2021 (this does not include plane-related emissions and energy use — of course, right?), according to Business Insider.
