During the confirmation hearing for Pam Bondi to the office of Attorney General of the United States on Wednesday, Democrats seemed to take the tact of pressuring Bondi to swear to them that she would NOT weaponize the Department of Justice (DOJ) against President-elect Donald Trump’s political opponents.
No irony there at all. None (wink, wink).
So leave it to everyone’s senatorial hearing questioner, Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), to call out the hypocrisy of his colleagues during his time speaking with and questioning Bondi. Kennedy spoke of outgoing Attorney General Merrick Garland’s pursuit of Trump during President Joe Biden’s term in office.
“The most destabilizing act that I saw in the past four years, maybe in the history of the [DOJ], is when Attorney General Garland decided on the basis of dubious facts and untested legal theories to criminally prosecute a fomer president of the United States,” Kennedy said. “And not only that, this is the special part; he decided to do it after the former president of the United States had announced that he was gonna run against Attorney General Garland’s boss, didn’t he?”

“Senator, are you referring to going after a political opponent?” Bondi asked.
“I think so,” Kennedy replied.
“Now, this is one person’s opinion,” Kennedy continued. “That kind of stupid takes a plan. And I say that because, number one, this is America. That had never happened before in America. That’s the sort of thing that happens in a country whose Powerball jackpot is 287 chickens and a goat.”

It’s rich that Democrats want to play “holier than thou” during these hearings considering what they’re asking of the nominees that they clearly are in opposition of are things that they’ve seemingly already done themselves over the last four to eight years.
