Well, it’s official. Those that run the education system in Oregon are racists, and they just proved it.
For an explanation, one need go no further than read a recent headline from Oregon Live, an outlet of The Oregonian.
“Oregon again says students don’t need to prove mastery of reading, writing or math to graduate, citing harm to students of color,” the headline read.
So, students in Oregon don’t need to pass reading, writing or math proficiency tests in order to graduate high school, because those exams disproportionately affect “students of color.”
That’s so racist, it bears repeating in plain English.

According to Oregon Live:
Higher rates of students of color, students learning English as a second language and students with disabilities ended up having to take intensive senior-year writing and math classes to prove they deserved a diploma. That denied those students the opportunity to take an elective, despite the lack of evidence the extra academic work helped them in the workplace or at college, they said.
Board members underscored that state-mandated standardized tests will still be administered to most Oregon high school students – they just won’t be used to determine whether a student has the skills necessary to graduate.
So then why even have these kids go to school if the piece of paper you’re going to give them, instead of the students earning it, is meaningless? What’s the point of school if not to learn how to be proficient enough in the basic subjects that will help in the real world?
On top of all of that, to use the excuse that these standards hurt students of color the most is tantamount to them saying that those same students are naturally dumber.
That’s a level of racism that would make Margaret Sanger proud.
