For years, the world of hip-hop was a wasteland of mumble rappers, living in excess beyond your means and sexual depravity. But in the last few years, there has been a resurgence of legit rappers with some real to say, as it was through the 1980s and 1990s.
Now, there are rappers like Tom MacDonald, Dax, Struggle Jennings (Waylon Jennings step-grandson), Ren, NF and Adam Calhoun. These are men rapping about real issues that impact real people instead of catering to specific demographics that the average person can’t relate to.
Recently (last Friday), Dax dropped a new song and music video on YouTube called “A Real Man.” The subject matter almost makes it a follow-up to his smash hit, “To Be A Man,” which he released a little over a year ago.
In “To Be A Man,” Dax pretty much went country and sang an attempt at explaining to those that might not understand what it’s like to “To Be A Man” in today’s society.
“I can’t hide myself. I don’t expect you to understand,” Dax sang. “I just hope I can explain, what it’s like to be a man.”
In the follow up, “A Real Man,” Dax raps about the heightened expectations on men by the women who say they want just that, “A Real Man.”
Here’s the hook (essentially a chorus) for the song:
Yeah she says she wants a real man, One who opens up the door holds her hand, And still smiles when he feels bad, In control of his emotions
Wears his heart on his sleeve, but don’t get mad, One who gives her all his time, Puts his dreams to the side, And gets a real bag
Yeah she says she wants a REAL MAN, But what she wants is not for REAL MAN
The video follows a man who works his tail off as an auto mechanic, while his wife is getting ready for a night out on the town. The husband calls his wife and says the garage is short-handed and he needs to work extra. The wife understands. But when the husband gets home, he’s so distraught over not being able to take his wife out that he grabs a drink in the kitchen.

The wife then throws his emotions, primarily the way he’s dealing with them, back in his face by threatening to leave him.
So as a real man broken and confused, Struggling not knowing what to do, He dove to the bottom of the bottle, Drowned in his sorrows
And prayed one day she would rescue, By stop pointing out all his mistakes, Be the place he felt safe, To express the emotions
The world said he can’t, He’s the rock that she needs, But she hammers away, At the love that he has, Like she wants it to break
Despite all of the pain, He twisted and changed, Trying to become, the whole picture she paints, Till she woke up one day
Said she’s walking away
Let me just put it this way: Ladies, we want to give you the world. We just know we have to work our behinds off in order to give you a lot of things you say you want and we feel you deserve.
But, it takes patience. It takes understanding. And there are a lot of ladies out there that get that. These are just songs that convey how men feel without necessarily showing you weakness.
Many men these days feel like women always want us to be open with our emotions, but when we are, a lot of times it’s used against us as if it’s the aforementioned weakness — if not immediately, then eventually.
Basically, don’t say you want one thing and then throw it back at a man when he gives what he thinks you want.
Again, I’m not saying this is the case with ALL ladies. But, it’s obviously common enough that the previous release, “To Be A Man,” resonated so much that it has 26.5 million views on YouTube and 19.5 million stream on Spotify. And, in just a few days, “A Real Man” is closing in on one million YouTube views and 300,000 streams on Spotify.
We’re not saying that you shouldn’t want a “high value man,” ladies. We’re just saying that the world isn’t given to you overnight. “We don’t expect you to understand. We just hope we can explain, what it’s like to be a man.”
Well done, Dax.
