Is He Wrong? Stephen A. Smith Skeptical of Zuckerberg's Motivation for Sudden Change of Heart

All this fervor over Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg essentially doing a 180 on how he runs his platform raises red flags for me. Granted, I live by the mantra of ‘Don’t Trust Anyone.’ But, I also live by the practice of ‘I’ll believe it when I see it happening,’ rather than blindly praising someone, especially with the track record of Zuckerberg and how he spread his ‘Zuckerbucks’ just four short years ago.

While I don’t agree on very much with blowhard sports analyst and podcaster Stephen A. Smith, at least he had the guts to be skeptical about Zuckerberg when taking his track record into account.

Smith was talking to NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo about Zuckerberg's recent moves, including putting UFC President Dana White on the Meta Board of Directors and reportedly axeing Facebook’s biased “fact-checkers” in favor of an X-style community notes system. His skepticism of Zuckerberg is well-founded.

“This is a guy that was all about the people, all about free speech, all about free expression and what have you. But then you went about the business of literally limiting conservative voices, of vax skeptics, along with other people. And so, you did that and some people accused you of influencing the election in 2020.

Why? Because the Zuckerberg initiative, led by his wife donating about $420 million to causes that they believe helped the Democratic cause. So, if you’re Trump you’re saying, ‘I remember all of this. I remember how you came at me. I remember how you tried to backdoor me and help facilitate bootin’ me outta office. Well, now I’m back in power. And not only am I back in power, I got my man Elon Musk with me, your competition over at X.’

So all of a sudden you’re looking at Mark Zuckerberg and you clearly see him essentially, figuratively speaking, on his knees trying to make amends for some errors that he has made. Because the one thing we know that Trump has mastered in terms of its definition in the dictionary is retribution and reciprocation. Mark Zuckerberg knows this, and he doesn’t want to be in this man’s path over the next few years.”

Tell me where Smith is wrong in his assessment of the situation. I’ll wait. Again, like I said, I don’t agree on very much with him, but Smith’s prevailing point rings more than true in this situation.

But, to give some credit to Zuckerberg, even if he’s doing what’s he doing to avoid incurring the wrath of President-elect Donald Trump, if he actually puts these moves into practice, it’s a win-win overall…at least for now.
