There’s a reason that baseball is the only major sport where people talk about being romantic when thinking about it — ‘How can you not be romantic about the sport of baseball?’ The tradition, the legacy of it being the oldest official American sport, the passion of those involved and the relationship between the players and the fans. It’s something special that if you don’t know, it’s difficult to describe to make someone understand.
So when New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone and the home plate umpire were talking over an issue before the beginning of a recent game, they did something that some who have commented on social media about the clip have said “is the most American thing ever.”
While they were arguing, debating or just talking over some issue “God Bless America” was being played. Both Boone and the umpire took off their hats out of respect and stop talking while the song was being performed.
Take a look:
As soon as the song was over, Boone gave a few claps and the pair resumed their conversation.

I don’t care what anyone wants to tell me about football or basketball, and hockey is a Canadian sport in origin, but baseball was, IS and always will be “America’s Pastime.”
I can still remember former Chicago Cubs outfielder Sammy Sosa — a Dominican player — running along the outfield wall at Wrigley Field while holding an American flag in the first game played after the attacks of September 11, 2001.
Who could forget that very same season, the New York Yankees of all teams, making it to the World Series, even they came up short against the expansion Arizona Diamondbacks.
And there’s always the famous clip of former Chicago Cubs outfield Rick Monday snatching an American flag away from two protesters attempting to burn it on the field at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles in 1976.
Baseball provides for so many moments that are embedded in the fabric of the rich tapestry of the American way of life. You remember where you were in moments like that, and they span generations.
God bless America, and props to Boone and the umpire for showing their respect to the game and the country.
