I never thought I’d say this, but TDS sufferer and actor Alec Baldwin actually made a decent point based on critical thought and an analysis of a time in history compared to today. Now, a lot of conservatives automatically dismiss his words because they dislike the guy so much. And while I dislike him as well, I’m cognizant and self-aware enough to acknowledge when even someone who presents themself as my enemy says something even mildly profound or astute.
Baldwin recently posted a video of himself to social media in which he spoke about his thoughts about the current state of the U.S. following his viewing of documentary director Ken Burns’ “Civil War.”
“I look at the politics of it, of where people are in this country today in the division and how they’re holding fast, and no one’s going to falter, no one’s going to break or compromise,” Baldwin said. “And it’s bad.”
Indeed. Criticize the man all you want. He’s brought it upon himself, but his words ring true.
Look at all the political violence from the left. Look at how we’ve gotten to a point where people on the right or left, conservatives or liberals, Marxists or Libertarians, will not “break or compromise.”
And I’m one of those people. The left has pushed our society so hard towards insanity, flying in the face of common sense and/or reason and logic, that it’s become almost impossible to reach any middle ground with people who have clearly displayed that they have no desire to do so.
While I can appreciate Baldwin’s analysis, there are two things that I have to address.
One, as I said above, this impasse we all seem to find ourselves at sits primarily at the feet of the left. Now, right or left, establishment swamp monsters still exist and are also a big part of the division in this country.
At one point, Baldwin talks about how the U.S. is “now in a pre-Civil War culture, in a pre-Civil War environment, which brings me to my second point of contention.
WE ARE ALREADY IN A CIVIL WAR.
With both sides seemingly unwilling to find common ground, one side currently performing acts of domestic terrorism, and culture more divided than ever among the “sides,” we’re in a different kind of Civil War.
Everyone expects a Civil War to be like it was 160 years ago, with two sides facing each other on a battlefield. But that’s just not how things work anymore.
One last point that I’d like to bring up is the hate brought towards this subject and the automatic dismissal of these thoughts just because someone a lot of people don’t like said it.
I can’t stand Alec Baldwin. But that doesn’t discount a valid point. Ask yourselves this: If you read his words, without knowing he said them, would you feel different?
