Tennessee Titans wide receiver Rishard Matthews announced he will be wearing custom cleats on Sunday in honor of former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick for making “the ultimate sacrifice” by beginning the controversial National Anthem protests.

Matthews,  who tweeted in October that he'd quit the NFL if the league forced players to stand for the anthem, chose Kaepernick’s foundation Know Your Rights Camp to represent as a part of the NFL’s “My Cause, My Cleats” initiative which allows players to wear their own cleats for a week to honor a charitable cause.

Know Your Rights Camp “is a free campaign for youth fully funded by Colin Kaepernick to raise awareness on higher education, self empowerment, and instruction to properly interact with law enforcement in various scenarios,” according to its website.

“I dont have a foundation so i have chosen to support my brother @kaepernick7 foundation @yourrightscamp for #MyCauseMyCleats,” Matthew's Instagram post reads. “He has paid the ultimate sacrifice in order to bring true everyday issues to light…. We Should ALL Know Our Rights & Be Able to Express Them Freely.”

The black and white cleats feature Kaepernick’s name, his foundation’s name, and a drawing of Kaepernick kneeling with a fist as his head.

Kaepernick was named GQ’s “2017 Citizen of the Year,” described by the magazine as a martyr who lost his job for a greater cause.

“Much has changed in the four years since Colin Kaepernick was last on the cover of GQ,” the GQ description reads. “Back then he was a rippling superhero of a quarterback on the rise. But a simple act—kneeling during the national anthem—changed everything. It cost him his job. It also transformed Colin Kaepernick into a lightning rod and a powerful symbol of activism and resistance.”

He remains unsigned as a free agent and recently filed a grievance against the NFL accusing team owners of collusion following his protests during the National Anthem.
