New Poll Shows Consensus on Abortion Limits

A new Marist poll shows that a huge majority of American favor at least some restrictions on abortion.

The survey found that 81% of Americans - including 66% of those who consider themselves "Pro-Choice" - say that the right to an abortion should be limited to, at most, the first three months of pregnancy.

The poll also found that a majority of Americans (55%) view abortion as being harmful to women.

66% of Americans view abortion as being "morally wrong" and 69% oppose taxpayer funding of abortion.

“Year in and year out since we began polling on this issue, the American people have understood that the law can protect mother and child alike and have expressed a strong consensus in favor of abortion restrictions,” said Carl Anderson, who is the CEO of Knights of Columbus, the group that commissioned the poll.

“It is time for a new national conversation on abortion — one that begins with this consensus in favor of restrictions: a consensus that American women and men have already reached, and that includes a majority even of those who call themselves pro-choice.”

The survey of 2,079 adults was conducted Jan. 7 through Jan. 13, 2015, by the Marist Poll and sponsored by the Knights of Columbus.
