New Petition Calls for LeBron James to Replace Betsy DeVos As Education Secretary

5.6k views

Apparently, you don’t need to have had much of an education to be the U.S. Secretary of Education. Well, that’s if you ask the Left.

A new petition calling for NBA superstar LeBron James to become the Secretary of Education has received 13,000 signatures, so far. Every time the petition reaches its supposed goal, the goal moves up 1,000 votes short in order to get more people to sign up. This is a smart tactic to make it seem that they’re so close to reaching the ever-moving goal in the eyes of prospective signers.

The extremely biased petition compares James with current Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

Here’s the comparison given by the petition, which was started by a Care2 Petitions user identified as “Rebecca G.”:

The first candidate is famed athlete LeBron James, a highly respected and extremely influential community advocate and activist who recently opened a state-of-the-art public school for at-risk children in Akron, Ohio — with community services on-site like job placement for parents, guaranteed college tuition for every student who graduates, and a score of other student services like a FREE bicycle and helmet.

The second candidate is Betsy DeVos, a scandal-ridden Republican donor who shows an inexcusable dislike for public education, wants to gut protections for women and minorities, and has advocated for teachers to be armed in schools.

James through his charity — the LeBron James Family Foundation — did open a new school in his hometown of Akron, Ohio recently. But, according to cleveland.com, since the school is of the public variety, taxpayers will be springing for 75 to 80 percent of the costs. So while many people are heaping all the praise on James, it's really Akron citizens who should be giving themselves a big pat on the back.

Notice the adjectives the highly-emotional petition uses when describing both James' character and DeVos character and supposed actions. For James, “highly respected” and “extremely influential” were used as descriptors. In DeVos’ case, the terms “scandal-ridden,” inexcusable dislike” and “wants to gut protections” were used.

Like most things that the far-Left puts their ill-informed minds to, feelings trump facts.

As far as James goes, he has been in the national consciousness since he was a sophomore in high school. The constant media attention couldn’t have made his junior and senior years very educationally fruitful, especially with the prospect of millions of dollars awaiting on the horizon. James skipped college in order to capture those millions and dazzle NBA crowds across the country.

I can never take anything away from James as far as basketball goes. He’s definitely one of the top five basketball players of all-time. But, to suggest that James should be the Secretary of Education simply for opening a majority tax payer funded school is crazy. Good for James for taking part in the opening of a school, but one would tend to think that someone who is highly educated should be in the position of Secretary of Education.
