Puerto Ricans who wanted their island to become the 51st state of the Republic are going to be disappointed by an announcement from Chuck Schumer (D-NY).
According to the Federalist, the Senate Majority Leader, who last year advocated for Puerto Rican statehood, has changed his mind and withdrawn his support from their cause.
In regard to House Rep. Ritchie Torres’ (D-NY) plans to promote Puerto Rico from territory status, Schumer firmly stated, “I don’t agree with them, I’m not going to support their statehood bill.”
This stands in contrast to what Schumer professed in 2020, when he said, “Believe me, on D.C. and Puerto Rico, particularly if Puerto Rico votes for it — D.C. already has voted for it and wants it — I’d love to make them states.” (Of course, that was only after having repeatedly hedged on the issue before.)
