This is why we can’t have nice things. Grown adults are increasingly acting like children, because people under 40 years of age have generally been told all their lives that they are special no matter the circumstances.

Associate professor of English at the University of North Carolina at Asheville (UNCA) Amanda Wray turned herself into police on Sunday after she and another woman were caught stealing political signs of local political action committee, Angry Buncombe Taxpayers.

The 38-year-old professor, who also reportedly has a Ph.D. in “rhetoric, composition, and the teaching of English, was caught by the committee’s treasurer Mike Summey, who told the Citizen Times that when he confronted the pair of women who stole the signs they simply “kept on walking.”

“I told them that stealing political signs was against the law, and that I’d call the police,” Summey said. “They just kept right on walking while I was trying to talk to them.”

According to North Carolina law, it is in fact a Class 3 misdemeanor “for a person to steal, deface, vandalize, or unlawfully remove a political sign that is lawfully placed under this section.”

Before Wray and her accomplice left the scene, Summey said he took a picture of Gray’s license plate. That’s when law enforcement implicated Wray in the theft of the committee’s signs, and she subsequently turned herself in.

Summey brought up some pretty good questions concerning Wray, displaying his disappointment that she turned out to be a college professor.

“My question is real simple. What is a 38-year-old woman with a Ph.D., that's a college professor, doing out at 10 o'clock at night stealing political signs?” Summey told WLOS. “What does that say to our young people? What does that say to the community about some of the people that are working down at our local university?”

Summey’s assessment of the situation perfectly encapsulates the ideological Civil War that currently inhabits American institutions of higher leaning.

Of course, UNCA sidestepped the situation, saying that the issue is between the two parties and law enforcement, not the university.

People like Wray are children that never grew up. A child doesn’t put as much stock in the law as adults should. That’s why we constantly see grown people fly off the handle when anyone disagrees with them, and all that does is make the rest of us look at them as grown children.

It’s a sign. It’s not an edict or indictment of you personally. Grow up and get over it.
