Mythbusters' Adam Savage Says He Made It Through A TSA Scanner With Razor Blades

At an event called wOOtstock 2.0 in Seattle on May 7th 2010 Adam Savage of Mythbusters fame claimed that he accidentally carried two "12 inch razor blades" onto a plane despite going through a controversial full body scanner. Interesting to say the least:

If this is true, and I don't see any reason to doubt it is, then it says a lot about how carefully the TSA is looking at these scanner images or even how detailed they really are. When these scanners were first proposed years ago, well before the underwear bomber ever appeared by the way, the entire idea was that they would do a better job of detecting things that weren't part of the body. You know, like 12 inch metal razor blades. They weren't developed to detect non-metal explosives or the like.

This was the one area that most experts agree the full body scanners can easily detect. Yet, here we are. This all begs the question, of course, how effective are these machines and the TSA at large?
