The step-granddaughter of Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman was fatally stabbed on a New York sidewalk early Sunday.

Actress E’Dena Hines, 33, was reportedly murdered by her boyfriend Lamar Davenport, 30, during what was described as an “exorcism” by witnesses.

George Hudacko, who witnessed the violent attack from his apartment window, said he heard Davenport yelling, “Get out devils! I cast you out, devils! In the name of Jesus Christ, I cast you out!” as he stabbed Hines repeatedly with a hunting knife.

“The girl was making a lot of noise, screaming,” Hudacko said. “I called 911. I was begging them to come.”

According to New York Post, Davenport was in a drug-induced psychosis during the incident. “By 3 a.m., Davenport was so crazed that he continued his attack even as Hines lay lifeless on the sidewalk,” writes the magazine.

Hines was stabbed 16 times, law enforcement officials said.

Davenport was taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation following the incident and has since been charged with murder.

Freeman, 78, issued a statement on Sunday night after his young family member’s tragic and senseless death:

“The world will never know her artistry in talent, and how much she had to offer. Her friends and family were fortunate enough to have known what she meant as a person. Her star will continue to shine bright in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. May she rest in peace.”

E'Dina Hines was the granddaughter of Freeman's first wife, Jeannette Adair Bradshaw. She studied acting at New York University.
