More Than 100 Already Shot in Chicago Since Beginning of Year

It's been just over a week into the the new year, and more than 100 people have been shot in the city of Chicago.

As of Monday morning, 19 people have been killed in gun-related crimes and 101 have been wounded. This includes seven individuals who were shot to death last weekend.

In a city known for its strict anti-gun laws, Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi has released a statement saying that most of the shootings have been gang-related.

"The majority of the gun violence we've seen are a result of chronic gang conflicts driven in part by social media commentary and petty disputes among rival factions," said Guglielmi. "Despite an overall lack of cooperation from gang members, detectives are working aggressively and making optimistic progress in several cases."

The Chicago PD's apparent surprise at the fact that gang members haven't been helpful in stopping the ongoing epidemic of violence in the city has led the department to call for "stronger state and federal gun laws." These new laws would come in addition to the strict gun laws that the city of Chicago already has on the books that are clearly working splendidly.

The city of Chicago does not allow its citizens to openly carry firearms. Although the Supreme Court struck down Chicago's handgun ban in 2010, there is still not a single gun store in the city. The city has no civilian gun ranges, but does have bans on both assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Shockingly, the criminals that make Chicago one of the most violent cities in the nation when it comes to gun violence don't seem to be bothered by these strict regulations.
