Montel Williams broke down on Greta van Susteren's Fox show yesterday when discussing the case of 31-year-old U.S. Marine Amir Hekmati, who has been imprisoned in Iran since 2011.

Amir was arrested on charges of espionage and condemned to death. His sentence was then commuted and his legal status is uncertain. The U.S. government, and Amir, have denied the spying allegations. Amir's family says that he has been subjected to physical and mental torture and confined to a tiny cell for long periods of solitary confinement.

Montel has advocated for the release of American prisoners held in Iran for several years.

Yesterday Montel tweeted:

Though a supporter of the possible Iran nuclear deal, "actions still speak louder than words," said Amir's advocate, Representative Dan Kildee (D-Mich.). "Without tangible actions, Iran will continue to be viewed by most observers with skepticism. Iran can take a significant step to facilitate trust by releasing Amir Hekmati, an American citizen, from prison."

"As another round of sanctions are considered against Iran, members of Congress are trying to determine if Iran is truly committed to reform, or merely engaging in well calculated obfuscation," wrote Kildee. "Reuniting Amir with his family would be a material, tangible and easily understood representation that Iran is serious about restoring its relationship with America and the world community."
