Missouri has become the latest state to pass a new abortion law.

The law signed by Republican Missouri Gov. Mike Parson on Friday bans abortions after eight weeks of pregnancy. The legislation includes exceptions for medical emergencies, but like the Alabama abortion ban, not for cases of rape and incest.

Also like the Alabama law, women cannot be prosecuted for having abortions.

The Hill reports,

The controversial measure is slated to go into effect Aug. 28. Doctors who violate the law could face up to 15 years in prison.

Missouri is the first state this year to pass an eight-week abortion ban, though others, including Kentucky and Georgia, recently passed laws prohibiting the procedure after the detection of a fetal heartbeat, usually around six weeks of pregnancy.

The news comes amid continued uproar over Alabama’s new abortion law, which liberals are calling an assault on women's rights.

Some counties and states are going so far as to ban employees from traveling to Alabama for business, as MRCTV reported.

Missouri Gov. Parson commended his state's legislature "for getting this bill to my desk" and called it “a strong message to the nation that here in Missouri, we will always stand for life, protect women’s health and advocate for the unborn.”
