I’m not really sure how I feel about this next one.
Former Miss America winner, former Fox News host and current head of the Miss America Organization’s board of trustees Gretchen Carlson announced on Tuesday that the almost century old beauty competition will no longer be based on looks. Carlson also announced that the competition won’t include a swimsuit portion anymore.
One the one hand, I think it’s great that future Miss America contestants will be judged based on the type of person they are and what they say. On the other hand, the Miss America competition has always been considered a beauty pageant. I guess my question is, why can’t it be both? Has the Miss America competition gone full modern feminist?
“We're not going to judge you on your appearance because we are interested in what makes you you,” Carlson said, according to CNBC.
Again, why can’t you incorporate both? Holding a beauty contest without judging a person’s looks is tantamount to judging a pizza restaurant without eating a single slice.
You might as well drop the people who judge the competition and open up voting to viewers at home. In fact, drop the Miss America name and just call it “American Idol.”
“It's what comes out of their mouths that we care about,” said Carlson.
If that’s the case, since they’re not judging the competition based on looks anymore, will competition officials limit who can participate? What I’m saying is, if I went to them and said that I identify as a woman — a really ugly woman, but a woman nonetheless — will they allow me to compete based on my opinions?
I’m all for making the competition a combined score of intelligence and looks, but when you base a beauty contest on everything but looks, then it ceases being a beauty contest.
To each their own, though. We’ll see what happens in the ratings when the new format is rolled when the Miss America competition airs on September 9.
