Jim Harbaugh has enjoyed a successful career coaching the Michigan Wolverines football team. In consecutive years, he has beaten rival Ohio State, won the Big Ten conference, and reached the College Football Playoff. He is 74-26 in his tenure coaching the Maze N’ Blue and has the program poised for success in the coming seasons.

But Harbuagh doesn’t just keep his mind on football. In an interview with Sports Illustrated, he lamented that many young American kids are not showing a strong amount of initiative.

How does he know this? Kids aren’t mowing lawns anymore.

“It makes me sad sometimes when I drive around Ann Arbor,” Harbaugh said. “It used to be kids mowing the lawns. I was that kid, out mowing lawns, earning some money. Now it’s a truck and a crew at every house.”

Harbaugh is onto something. Whether it's for making money or helping out their parents, younger kids should be willing to cut the grass every now and again. It is a small yet important way for anyone to learn about taking care of what you own and handling responsibilities.

Sadly, many American kids grow up without learning anything about a positive work ethic, and don’t have much expected of them.

But despite all the pressures of being the head coach of one of the most prestigious programs in college football, Harbaugh still makes time mow his own lawn. He even said he'd consider making that his career if he weren’t involved in football.

“It accomplishes three things,” Harbaugh said of cutting his own grass. “I’m clearing my mind or thinking of new plays; I feel good about what I accomplish; and I either make money or I save money.”

The next generation can learn a lot from Harbaugh’s words. Taking small steps to expand your capacity for initiative goes a long way in helping build a successful life. All you need to do is bust out the lawnmower.
