Actress Meryl Streep briefly spoke about fake news in a recent interview with Vogue magazine editor Anna Wintour.

Streep is promoting her forthcoming film “The Post,” which tells the story of how in 1971 newspaper editors at the New York Times, Washington Post, and Boston Globe were leaked classified government documents containing revelations about government officials’ handling of the Vietnam War. Risking jail, the editors choose to publish was became known as the Pentagon Papers.

In “The Post,” which is directed by Steven Spielberg and opens December 22, Streep plays Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham.

In their conversation, Wintour argued that there is a correlation between the the government trying to keep the Pentagon Papers sealed and accusations that there was collusion between Donald Trump and the Russians to affect the 2016 presidential election. The implication is that in both cases the government is hiding the truth.

The exchange with Streep happens at the 2:05 mark of the video below.

Wintour: One has to think about the Mueller investigation and the current climate in which investigative journalist is daily pitched against fake news.

Streep: The key is knowing when we are being lied to - or worse, when we’re being diverted from looking in a direction in which we might learn something.  The suspense that Steven Spielberg has imbued the story with and how many times it resonates with the present moment is something that is pretty, pretty exciting.
