United States Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT) star Megan Rapinoe announced this past weekend that she plans on retiring from soccer after the 2023 season.

We can all breathe a collective sigh of relief that perhaps the most annoying, shameless, and self-centered athlete/social justice warrior will no longer be representing America. But that doesn’t mean she’s going away quietly.

In an interview with “Time,” Rapinoe took the opportunity to once again advocate for transgendered females (biological men) to be allowed to compete in women’s sports. And her desire isn’t simply limited to lower-level sports - she’d be fine if a transgender player were allowed to compete on the USWNT...now that she's leaving, of course.

“Absolutely,” Rapinoe said when asked if she’d welcome a transgender on the national squad. “‘You’re taking a 'real' woman’s place,’ that’s the part of the argument that’s still extremely transphobic. I see trans women as real women. What you’re saying automatically in the argument — you’re sort of telling on yourself already — is you don’t believe these people are women. Therefore, they’re taking the other spot. I don’t feel that way.”

She also added that anyone in culture who speaks out against transgenders in women’s sports is helping create an environment in which trans people are victims of mass oppression.

“I don’t want to mince words about it,” she said. “Dave Chappelle making jokes about trans people directly leads to violence, whether it’s verbal or otherwise, against trans people. When (women's tennis legend) Martina (Navratilova) or (ESPN anchor) Sage (Steele) or whoever are talking about this, people aren’t hearing it just in the context of elite sports. They’re saying, ‘The rest of my life, this is how I’m going to treat trans people.’”

It’s not transphobic to say that deranged men who believe they’re females can’t simply do whatever they want and should be kept out of women’s sports. No matter the athletic context, biological men always outperform the women they against whom they compete thanks to biological advantages.

It’s also convenient that Rapinoe is saying this now, just months before she retires from soccer altogether and weeks before her final World Cup concludes. If her wish ever unfortunately came true, the next generation of female soccer athletes would suffer immensely, and Rapinoe wouldn’t experience any of the consequences.

While Rapinoe certainly isn’t the only ardent progressive on the USWNT and likely won’t stop being a megaphone for progressive causes, it's certainly nice to know that her days in American soccer are limited, if for nothing more than not having to hear her lecture us about how we need to be more inclusive of trans people at the expensive of hardworking women.
