A city in Maryland is considering whether or not to allow illegal immigrants to vote.

College Park, a suburb of Washington, D.C. and the home of the University of Maryland's main campus, has around 30,000 residents. According to the Baltimore Sun, the proposed measure would allow "non-residents," including undocumented immigrants, to vote on city ordinances and cast ballots for mayor and city council members.

College Park City Council Member Christine Nagle says the measure "just made sense," telling the Baltimore Sun, "These are folks who have a significant stake in our community, and who rely on the facilities in our city."

Other city council members, including Mary Cook, disagree, though Cook did say she will take her constituents' opinions into account while considering the proposal.

College Park would not be the first city in Maryland to allow illegal immigrants to vote. Several other cities, all in the D.C.-adjacent Montgomery and Prince George Counties, have adopted such policies. This includes Takoma Park, Barnesville, and--as of last year--Hyattsville. The new measure, however, would not give illegal aliens the right to vote in statewide or federal elections.

Though it would not be the first, College Park would be the largest city to allow non-citizen voting, if the measure passes.
