Almost two decades ago, she released "Hips Don’t Lie," and now, she’s speaking the truth.

In an interview with Allure, pop star Shakira gave a surprising answer when asked what she thought of the 2023 Barbie movie.

“My sons absolutely hated it. They felt that it was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent,” she said. “I'm raising two boys. I want 'em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women. I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide.”

“I believe in giving women all the tools and the trust that we can do it all without losing our essence, without losing our femininity. I think that men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose as well. We complement each other, and that complement should not be lost," she want on.

I never thought that I’d say this, but I couldn’t agree more with Shakira. How much of the constant mistrust between the sexes would go away if we all just collectively realized that men and women are different and created to work together? Then again, a worrying number of people these days can’t even define “man” or “woman.”

Regardless of opinion on the Barbie movie (I haven’t seen it, so I wouldn’t know), I hope that we can return to the day when takes like Shakira’s weren’t controversial.
