More than half (52%) of American voters want a criminal investigation of Hillary Clinton’s email scandal, while 41% oppose a probe, a new poll released this week shows.

Republicans overwhelming (82%) support investigating Clinton’s release of classified materials, while two-thirds of Democrats (66%) object to a criminal investigation, the Monmouth University poll shows. A majority (54%) of independents want an investigation.

Regarding Clinton’s motive for using a personal email account in her work as Secretary of State, 68% of Republicans say she was trying to hide something, while 80% of Democrats believe it was just a matter of convenience.

Independents were more suspicious than trusting, with 48% saying she had something to hide and 41% citing “convenience” as her motive.

One in seven (14%) Democrats and one in five (20%) Independents have never even heard of the Clinton email scandal. Meanwhile, only seven percent of Republicans and 15% of all voters are unaware of the scandal.
