Louisiana state officials held a press conference on Monday to address the deadly attack on police in Baton Rouge.

Gov. John Bel Edwards (D-La.) said that the killings were not just an attack on police, but an “attack on the very fabric of society.”

“This was a diabolical attack on the very fabric of society,” said Edwards. “And that is not hyperbole. That is not an overstatement. There is nothing more fundamentally important than maintaining law and order so that people can have good, quality lives.”

“That is not what justice looks like,” he argued. “It’s not justice for Alton Sterling... It’s not justice for anybody.”

“It’s just pure, unadulterated evil,” said Gov. Edwards.

The man who fatally shot three officers and wounded three before being killed by police in a shootout Sunday morning has been identified as Gavin Long, 29, of Kansas City.

The investigation is ongoing and involves local, state, and federal officials.

The incident in Baton Rouge comes less than two weeks after a horrific attack on police in Dallas that killed five officers and wounded nine.
