LeBron James is worried about the future of Twitter after an odd trend occurred on the platform over the weekend.

The Los Angeles Lakers forward quote-tweeted a story from The Washington Post that showed that the use of the “N-word” increased 500 percent after Elon Musk officially took over the social media site. LeBron speculated whether or not Musk would do anything to stop the use of this word on Twitter.

While it is ironic that James of all people is the one asking for hate speech to be censored - as he has a tarnished record of spreading genuinely hateful speech on Twitter himself - he does raise a point here. Even though “hate speech” is a highly ambiguous term that often wrongly categorizes necessary truth as hateful (since our society runs on emotions to guide our consciences and not facts), we can all agree it is wrong to say that the “N-word” should not be allowed on any social media website.

Musk responded by referring James to a thread by his Head of Safety and Integrity, Yoel Roth, in which Roth somewhat responded to the story by saying that these were mostly bot accounts that, under the new measure Twitter will put in place, will not be allowed to surface again.

“Twitter will be forming a content moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints,” Musk said. “No major content decisions or account reinstatements will happen before that council convenes.”

It looks like LeBron’s fears should be quelled for the time being. But I wouldn’t be surprised if he finds a way to play speech police from the outside in the future.
