Lawyers for Kim Davis claim that the Kentucky district clerk met with Pope Francis when he was in the United States last week.

According to the Liberty Counsel website, Davis met with Francis at the Vatican Embassy in Washington DC last Thursday

According to her lawyer, the meeting lasted ten minutes and Davis took pictures with the Pope.

Davis, who was jailed after refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples, released a statement about the meeting saying, "I was humbled to meet Pope Francis. Of all people, why me? Pope Francis was kind, genuinely caring, and very personable. He even asked me to pray for him. Pope Francis thanked me for my courage and told me to 'stay strong.'"

Despite the Liberty Counsel's claims, the Vatican will not confirm or deny that the meeting ever took place. Nor have the pictures of Davis with the Pope been made public.

In his flight back to Rome Sunday, Francis was asked a question regarding the duty of public officials to carry out their duties, despite having personal religious objections to the laws in question.

"I can say the conscientious objection is a right that is a part of every human right. It is a right," Francis said. "Conscientious objection must enter into every juridical structure because it is a right, a human right."

According to the Liberty Counsel, Francis prayed with Davis and presented both her and her husband with a rosary that he personally blessed.
