Republicans had victories in two special elections Tuesday night, including the high profile race in Georgia where Karen Handel defeated Democrat Jon Ossoff for the 6th Congressional District seat.
“Thanks to everyone who breathlessly and snarkily proclaimed #GA06 as a “referendum on POTUS,” White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway tweeted, “You were right. #winning.”
Later she tweeted, “Laughing my #Ossoff
In a special election in South Carolina’s 5th district Republican Ralph Norman defeated Democrat Archie Parnell
President Trump tweeted his congratulations to both Handel and Norman Tuesday night:
“Congratulations to Karen Handel on her big win in Georgia 6th. Fantastic job, we are all very proud of you!”
“Ralph Norman ran a fantastic race to win in the Great State of South Carolina's 5th District. We are all honored by your success tonight!”
There have been five special congressional elections in 2017. In the four races where Republicans ran against Democrats, Republicans have won.
A California special election held earlier this year featured only two Democrats.
