The Latino Victory Fund, the group behind the anti-Ed Gillespie ad that portrayed Republicans as racists who mow down minority children with their pick-up trucks, claims the group will continue to run those kinds of ads in the future.
According to a report by BuzzFeed News, Latino Victory Fund said they will “double down” on its controversial campaign strategy in the wake of Democrat Ralph Northam’s victory in Virginia, despite their ad being taken offline.
Instead of removing the ad because it portrayed Republicans as child murderers, Latino Victory Fund’s President Cristobal Alex issued a statement defending the ad by saying, “We held a mirror up to the Republican Party, and they don’t like what they see.”
The statement said the ad was ultimately removed due to “recent events,” which happened to be a terrorist attack in New York City that involved a truck and left eight dead.
Alex told BuzzFeed after the victory, “Our ad was an honest reflection of the fears facing communities of color in Virginia and across the country. It was designed to raise Latino voters' awareness of Gillespie’s bigoted campaign tactics, and it accomplished that goal.”
“Faced with vicious, racist attacks, we usually turn the other cheek or point our finger at the bully. This time we threw a jab to the throat and we will continue raising our voices wherever and whenever racism rears its head,” he continued.
The Latino Victory Fund ad was criticized by the Washington Post editorial board as well as Northam himself. Northam’s campaign said, “Ralph Northam would not have run this ad and believes Virginians deserve civility, not escalation.”
Latino Victory Fund, however, would rather deal with politics by comparing all Republicans to Nazis.
