Kentucky House Speaker Greg Stumbo (D) channeled his inner televangelist last night following an upset in the state governor's race Tuesday, hypothesizing on Jesus’ political affiliation while admitting he hasn't actually read the whole Bible before making a strange comparison between Hillary Clinton and the Kentucky Derby.

From Stumbo's speech Tuesday night:

Our message has to be reflected upon. We can’t let them [Republicans] miscommunicate what our core values are. We can’t let them make people believe we are not godly people. We can’t make them believe that only Christians are Republicans, therefore entitled to hold office.

Now let me tell you, I’m gonna admit I have not read the Holy Book front to finish like some of you probably have. But my reading of our Bible shows that the word Republican or Democrat isn’t used. And people sometimes ask me, Joel, in places where you and I live, in Denton and Prestonsburg, what would Jesus have been if he were alive, would he have been a Democrat or a Republican? I don’t know. Nobody knows. The Bible doesn’t tell us that, does it?

But I believe the Bible is a book of parables. Jesus teaches us through lessons. We are children, and this is the
primer He uses to teach us lessons. So the lessons of our party are the lessons of the Bible.

Stumbo went on to suggest that the Virgin Mary's choice of transportation might somehow reflect the Son of God's political preference.

I don’t know whether Jesus would have been a Democrat or a Republican. And nobody else does. But I know this. He was a carpenter and a teacher. And I bet every carpenter and teacher I know are pretty good democrats. And the other thing I know is, if in fact the Bible is a book of parables, like I believe it is, think about this: Mary did not ride an elephant into Bethlehem that night.

So you go home and you go to your church and you tell people, ‘I’m a Democrat. I’m a God-fearing Democrat. I’m a Democrat that believes in the principles of the Bible that become the principles of our party.’

He then made some odd comparisons between Hillary Clinton and a horse…or something:

Now, I believe that there’s a horse out there. It’s not American Pharaoh. It’s an Arkansas Traveler. And that horse is bringing a lady jockey. And that horse and that jockey are going to come here to Kentucky next year and help us rebuild this party.

In what some are calling a surprise upset, Republican businessman Matt Bevin defeated Democratic Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway 53% to 44% for the state governorship Tuesday. Bevin will replace the current governor, Democrat Steve Beshear, when he takes office in January.
