Ohio Gov. John Kasich said in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper on Friday that he feels it would have been “inappropriate” for him to attend the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

He explained that he thought it would be insulting for him to go to the convention without the intention of supporting the Republican Party’s nominee.

“I didn’t go because … I think it’s about manners,” said the former Republican presidential candidate. “If I wasn’t prepared to go there and get up and endorse a nominee, I just thought it was inappropriate to go into that convention hall.”

As to his thoughts on the fast-approaching general election, Kasich said, “I wish that I could be fully enthusiastic.”

“I can’t be,” he added, clearly still uneasy with his former rival Donald Trump as the Republican presidential nominee. “So I don’t know what’s going to happen in the end.”

Asked about the possibility of voting for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in November, Kasich replied, “Well let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.”
