The Washington Redskins rebranded the franchise in 2022 to become the “Commanders” after receiving heavy criticism for what was deemed by some as an “offensive” nickname. But in a major twist of irony, a group of Indians has signed a petition for the NFL franchise to being back the (unnecessarily) controversial designation.

The Native American Guardian Association (NAGA) launched an effort to have Washington rid itself of the politically correct moniker earlier this month, and the petition has reached 128,000 signatures as of Monday. In this petition, NAGA stated the rebrand was highly unnecessary because “[t]he name 'Redskins' carries deep cultural, historical, and emotional significance, honoring the bravery, resilience, and warrior spirit associated with Native American culture."

"It was never intended as a derogatory or offensive term but as a symbol of respect and admiration. Changing the name abruptly disregards the positive legacy that the Redskins name has built over the years and disorients the passionate fans who have invested their emotions, time, and unwavering support in the team," the group went on.

How the tables have turned! The out-of-touch liberal mob that said this group of people was supposedly offended by the term were dead wrong; they actually want the nickname brought back!

However, not everyone is as eager as NAGA for another name change. Matthew Laux, a premium-seat sales manager for the Commanders, bashed the credibility of NAGA on August 18 in a text thread obtained by Fox News, part of which is in the screenshot below.

At the time, Laux was texting coworker Christina King, who was defending the previous team name. That frustrated Laux, which prompted the above text.

This evoked a strong response from Eunice Davidson, the co-founder and president of NAGA, who said that wiping out Indian influence in culture in forms such as this is discriminatory.

“People want to call us fake and they’ve done that before,” she said. “They never tell our story and that’s their goal. To wipe out Native history. It’s discrimination when you go after one culture like this.”

She’s not wrong. The left constantly tries to rewrite and or erase certain aspects of history for the sake of not “offending” anyone, it's one of their oldest tricks in the book. But leftists would be better served diving into history more honestly before they start calling for sports franchises to change their logos and team names.

But that’s probably too much to ask.

In the clip below, NAGA advisor Billy Dieckman also provided some fascinating perspective on the Redskins nickname shortly after the group began its campaign:
