Ten years ago, the headline I wrote for this story would be considered satire. But in today’s crazy world, its not a joke.

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith has created quite the stir in recent memory for toying with the idea of making a run for president in 2028. On Sunday, he spoke with ABC’s Jonathan Karl on Sunday to explain why he feels he absolutely has to consider making a run.

“I have no choice, because I’ve had elected officials — and I’m not going to give their names — coming up to me,” Smith said. “I’ve had folks who are pundits come up to me. I’ve had folks that got a lot of money, billionaires and others, that have talked to me about exploratory committees and things of that nature. I’m not a politician. I’ve never had a desire to be a politician.”

Despite contending that he has never wanted to be a politician, he believes that he must because of the many issues he has with the Trump administration. While he admits he is not the most qualified person in the world to undertake this role, he also doesn’t like any of the other options for the role.

“I would hope somebody else would step up that’s more qualified than me, but if it has to come down to me, it is something I would consider. Yes, I would because I don’t mind tussling with these folks at all on the left or the right. All of them disgust me, to be quite honest with you.”

Ronald Reagan was an actor before becoming governor of California, and then president. Donald Trump was a businessman before ascending to the White House. Could Smith, a sports talk show host, be the next outsider to be president?

It’s not the most far-fetched idea ever.
