A group of NFL owners are upset that the San Francisco 49ers are getting awarded for promoting diversity. No seriously.

In 2020, the NFL instituted a rule incentivizing teams to develop minority head coaches and general managers. If a team - the 49ers in this instance - had an employee that became a head coach or general manager of another franchise, the original team would get rewarded with one third-round compensatory pick for the next two drafts.

For example, the 49ers former defensive coordinator Robert Saleh got hired by the New York Jets to be their head coach in 2021. Therefore, the 49ers got one third-round pick in both the 2021 and 2022 drafts for “developing” a minority coach.

That’s not the only minority candidate San Francisco has developed. Since 2020, the 49ers have developed more of these candidates than anyone in the league:

  • Senior personnel executive and Vice President of Player Personnel Martin Mayhew became the general manager of the Washington Commanders in 2021
  • Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel became the Miami Dolphins head coach in 2022
  • Director of Player Personnel Ran Carthorn became the general manager of the Tennessee Titans in 2023
  • Defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans became the head coach for the Houston Texans in 2023

As you can see, the 49ers have earned lots of draft capital from these hires that the league decided should be rewarded in the name of "diversity."

And that has some owners jealous. So much for wanting to play by your own rules.

According to Seth Wickersham of ESPN, some owners are upset about how San Francisco has used this rule to their advantage:

"We know he can hire well and diverse. In fact, owners have complained to the league office about the sheer number of compensatory picks the 49ers have received for serving as a pipeline for coaches and executives of color."

Wait a second. The same owners that have falsely said that the NFL is systemically racist in its hiring practices are now upset that one of the league’s best teams is helping the diversity cause? And they are doing it through the rule these guys helped create in 2020!

The NFL decided it needed to have more diversity in its management ranks and San Francisco has figured out a way to get rewarded for using the rule change. Some people will always find ways to complain about another team’s success, even if there’s no reasonable grounds to do so.

I would know. I’m a New England Patriots fan.

What makes this news even stranger, is these complaints come at a time when some of the NFL's "diversity" efforts are being called racist and are being legally challenged.

The NFL is finding its tough to field fairness in the wake of being woke.
