Most people in America didn’t care a whole lot about Major League Soccer (MLS) until superstar Lionel Messi joined Inter Miami in July. Since then, interest in the league has skyrocketed and done wonders in creating a bigger fanbase for American soccer, with many A-list celebrities even showing up to watch these games.

You would think that would also make the members of the United States Men’s National Soccer Team (USMNT) happy, since more interest in the country’s domestic league could mean more support for the national team. But that’s oddly not the case.

Inter Miami visited LAFC on Saturday and won 3-1 in front of a record crowd at BMO Stadium. Some big names watched the game, including Will Ferrell, Leonardo DiCaprio, Selena Gomez, and Prince Harry.

But USMNT star Christian Pulisic seems a little jealous that these celebrities don’t come to any national team matches. As a result, he posted a tongue-in-cheek Instagram story in which he suggested Hollywood’s stars should come support the USMNT.

Pulisic’s response - while was likely intended to be humorous but was still poorly executed - again shows the unjustified high opinion the members of the USMNT have of their squad.

No one wants to spend lots of money to watch a mediocre national team beat the likes of Honduras and Costa Rica at North American tournaments and then barely make it out of group play in the World Cup. The team also acts like they deserve to be respected by the best sides in the world (which they don’t) and often use their platform to support woke causes.

If you compare that product with a team that boasts one of the best athletes to ever play the game, it’s easy to see why the USMNT can’t compete when it comes to drawing celebrity interest. The squad would have to change drastically before they can lure big stars to their matches.
